5 Steps to an AED Program
AEDs & Equipment
AEDs come in many styles, shapes and even colors. They all have one thing in common, they save lives. We have many options for you to choose from, click here to see our AEDs.

Wall Cabinets & Racks
Should you need to store your AED in a cabinet, we have all of the options you will need. Simply decide if you want to mount a cabinet (surface mount, semi-recessed, fully recessed), if you desire to have an audible alarm, a visual alarm, or be electronically monitored by your security division. Or choose to simply mount it on the wall in a rack. Click here to see your wall cabinet and rack options.

Signage
Being able to see your AED from a distance is important. We have signage for walls, doors, and posts. Click here to see your signage options

Prep Kits
Having the right tools to accompany your AED is extremely important. At a minimum, you will need a CPR barrier, gloves, a razor, and a pair of scissors. Click here to see your Prep Kit options.

CPR barriers & personal protection
Breathing barriers to be used while breathing for a victim is not just important, it's an OSHA requirement. Click here to see your CPR barrier and personal protection options.

Oxygen
Being able to deliver oxygen during any severe illness or injury is just one more way to effectively treat the patient. Oxygen delivery is simple and safe. Call for information on oxygen delivery options.

Mandated Medical Direction by California regulation
Many states currently require that a doctor must be involved in the development and continuing operation of your AED program. They are responsible for many of the components of your program.

Quality control in an AED program
After an AED is used during an emergency, a great amount of information is stored in the AED for retrieval at a later time. This internally generated report, along with written documentation from the rescuers describing the details of the event are key elements to producing a clear "picture" of the rescue efforts. After review of these elements, the Medical Director can determine if the AED program is performing to the level of expectation. The Medical Director will issue this report to you and indicate any changes that need to be made to your AED program. Click here to download a sample report form.

Medical Prescription for your AED
The FDA considers the AED a regulated medical device. The FDA requires that a licensed medical doctor must issue a prescription for your AED before you receive and operate an AED,

Program policies
The written instructions that give direction to an AED program are to be developed by or in conjunction with a medical doctor. These program policies are developed to be specific for your particular circumstances.

Mandated reporting to local and state agencies
Many states want to know where the AEDs in their communities are located. Specific state and county agencies are tasked with overseeing AED programs and are to be notified (typically annually and after an AED use). In addition, local EMS providers and fire departments are included in the list of entities to be kept in the informational loop.

Ensuring the correct course is chosen
There are many different CPR, first aid and AED courses that can be taught to your group. Ensuring you receive the correct class to fulfill any regulatory requirement is what we specialize in at RTI. Click here to see the list of courses and who should take them.

The proper number of rescuers have been trained
Who should you train at your agency? How many should be trained? These questions depend several factors. These factors can include the total area that you are trying to protect, the number of floors in each building, the number of occupants on each floor, the presence elevators, areas of limited access due to security issues, the type of operation in a structure, etc. When we are scheduling your classes, we will assist you in determining the correct number of rescuers that should be trained.

Training is completed by knowledgeable instructors
Our employees are firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs hand picked specifically for our instructional staff. They have years of experience in their fields of expertise and have qualified to become your course instructor. Each employee is a certified instructor by the American Heart Association and MEDIC FIRST AID.

Equipment tracking
AEDs can get lost in the year-to-year operation of a program. Batteries and electrode pads have expiration dates. And AEDs occasionally have issues that require the unit to be updated. Tracking the location, serial number, model, accessories and expiration dates of your AEDs and accessories is important. This is easily managed with WebAED. You will be alerted when a battery should be changed, when electrode pads expire. And it's easy to find the equipment for inventory and training purposes. Here's a screenshot of the user screen.

Training compliance tracking
Knowing who you trained in the past and who to train now is important. This avoids lapses in certifications and allows easy access to the training status of each student. When a student's certification is about to expire, you will receive an electronic reminder well in advance. Here's how that WebAED reminder looks.

Periodic equipment inspections
The number one reason cited for a failed attempt to use an AED is lack of maintenance. This unfortunate situation can be eliminated by periodic equipment checks. Simply, if the AED and accessories are checked on a monthly basis, you can rest assured that the AED is ready for a rescue. At a minimum, ensure that the AED is ready for use, the battery is currently ready for use, the electrode pads are in place and not out of date, and that all of the proper equipment is in or next to the AED. Click here for a sample AED equipment inspection form.

Placement and access to the AED
Placement of the AED is vital to the success of an AED program. Ideally, an AED should be at the patient's side within three minutes. This might be a brisk from the furthest point in the building to the AEDand back, or a three minute one-way trip once it is summoned by a means of communication (overhead page, pager, two-way radio). Many factors can impede the movement of an AED to the patient's side. The height of the AED cabinet might be too high for rescuers in a wheelchair, elevators may be in use by others, or access might be limited due to security reasons. All of these factors must be taken in account during the assessment process. On-site assessments are available through RTI, just call us at 916-939-2277.

Signage of the AED and equipment
Being able to find the AED is crucial during a rescue event. Not all AEDs are placed in line-of-sight in all buildings. Wall signs, door signs, and signs on posts are all helpful tools to ensure that AEDs are easily located. In addition, posting AED locations on evacuation maps are a great way of ensuring that all employees have access to one when needed. Click here to see our selection of AED signage .
